The Globe and Mail

CAYLEY, EDWARD CARTWRIGHT, on August 17th at Christie Gardens in Toronto in his 91st year, son of the late Arthur and Katharine Cayley, brother of the late Peter and David, father of David Cayley, Susan Ladipo and Jane Foulds, step-father of Eric and Frank Stephenson, divorced husband of the late Margaret Noble, mother of David, Susan and Jane, and husband of the late Norma Stuart Stephenson, mother of Eric and Frank, grandfather or step-grandfather of twelve, and great-grandfather of nine. He was born in Toronto in 1922, educated at Trinity College School, and Trinity College at the University of Toronto, and served with distinction in the Second World War as a submariner in the Royal Navy, achieving the rank of lieutenant commander. In 1950 he found his vocation as a teacher and taught at Trinity College School in Port Hope, Ontario (1950-1955), Holderness School in Plymouth, New Hampshire (1957-1962, 1966-1978), where he was assistant headmaster, and Stanstead College in Stanstead, Quebec (1962-1966) where he was headmaster. He spent his retirement in his native Toronto in the company of his family and old friends and was a faithful member of the congregation of Christ Church Deer Park. He was a loving husband to Norma, a generous father and grandfather, a loyal friend, and a lively companion. A war injury to his back produced lifelong pain which got worse as he grew older and finally forced him into a wheelchair, but he faced his sufferings in a brave and uncomplaining spirit, and he retained his interest in the world and in other people to the very end. He spent his last years at Christie Gardens where he was much loved. His family would like to express their appreciation to the staff there for their kind and considerate attention over the years. The funeral will be held at the church of St. James the Less, 635 Parliament St. (inside the gates on the east side just north of Wellesley) at 11:00 a.m. on Aug. 23rd.
